Neighbor helps put out Batavia garage fire

No one was injured in a garage fire in Batavia that caused about $40,000 of damage, authorities said.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

A resident in the 00-100 block of S. Jackson St. noticed the detached garage of a neighboring house was on fire and alerted the homeowner about 9:40 p.m. Sunday, according to a news release from the Batavia Fire Department. The neighbor used a fire extinguisher to help tame the fire before firefighters arrived at 9:46 p.m. - four minutes after they were dispatched.

The fire was located in the back of the garage at the house just west of downtown Batavia. The 15 firefighters who responded to the scene had it under control in about 20 minutes, authorities said.

Firefighters boarded up the garage for safety after checking it for any hot spots. By 11:45 p.m., all fire department personnel had cleared the scene.
