Civil War Days bring history to life in Lake County

The boom of cannons Saturday marked the opening day of the Lake County Forest Preserve District's Civil War Days event at Lakewood Forest Preserve near Wauconda.

The 25th annual encampment brings history to life with one of the largest Civil War re-enactments in northern Illinois. Visitors can explore Union and Confederate camps and learn about life in the 1800s through narrated battles, demonstrations, activities, period characters and entertainment.

Kids games and crafts, a scavenger hunt and a recreation of the 1863 Summer Agricultural Fair are all part of the event.

Afternoon narrated battles feature artillery, infantry and calvary units manned by hundreds of Civil War re-enactors.

Civil War Days continues Sunday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
