Illinois names part of I-55 for fighter pilot killed in 2014

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) - A stretch of Interstate 55 in central Illinois will be named after a fighter-jet pilot and "Top Gun" student who was killed in a 2014 training exercise.

The (Peoria) Journal Star reports (http://bit.ly/29b4GSo ) Illinois lawmakers on Thursday approved a resolution in honor of U.S. Marine Corps Maj. Reid Nannen.

The 32-year-old from Hopedale died when the fighter jet he was piloting crashed in Nevada.

Nannen was an Illinois State Scholar who attended the University of Illinois. He was commissioned a 2nd lieutenant in the U.S. Marines in 2004 and later served in Afghanistan.

The segment of Interstate 55 named the Major Reid Nannen Memorial Highway stretches from the Hopedale exit on Route 122 to Route 9.

Nannen was survived by his wife, four daughters, parents and two sisters.
