Woman dies in motorcycle crash on Route 20 in Elgin

A 54-year-old woman died Saturday in a motorcycle crash on Route 20 on Elgin's west side, authorities said.

The victim was riding on the back of the 2006 Harley Davidson late Saturday morning when its driver, a 56-year-old man, swerved to avoid a car attempting a turn from Highland Woods Boulevard onto Route 20. As the motorcyclist attempted to avoid the vehicle, he lost control, according to Elgin police.

The car was a 2006 Honda Accord driven by an 18-year-old Addison woman, who was trying to turn onto eastbound Route 20. The couple on the motorcycle was headed westbound on Route 20, authorities said.

The woman and man were both taken to Presence Saint Joseph Hospital. The man had nonlife threatening injuries, but the woman was later pronounced dead from injuries in the crash, police said.

Her identity was being withheld pending notification to relatives.

Elgin police responded to the scene at 11:44 a.m., and the intersection of Route 20 and Highland Woods remained closed for the next 3½ hours while the police department's traffic unit investigated. Witnesses to the crash who may have information are asked to contact police at (847) 289-2661.
