Concert series presents jazz by the Jon Rarick Nonet

The Jon Rarick Nonet will perform original jazz compositions and arrangements of bebop tunes and standards at 3 p.m. on Sunday, July 31, as part of the United Protestant Church of Grayslake Concert Series.

Rarick, a Grayslake resident, is a jazz composition graduate student and trumpet player at the Eastman School of Music at the University of Rochester in New York. Rarick was awarded in Downbeat Magazine's 37th Annual Student Music Awards for an original composition and has written music for the Eastman New Jazz Ensemble, the Eastman Studio Orchestra and the Elmhurst College Jazz Band.

A 2015 graduate of Elmhurst College, Rarick was a four-year member of the Elmhurst College Jazz Band, directed by Doug Beach, which has performed with notable artists such as Manhattan Transfer, Doc Severinsen, Ryan Truesdell, Bobby Shew, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Simone and many others. The band has performed around the world and hosts the annual Elmhurst College Jazz Festival.

The Jon Rarick Nonet consists of nine Chicago-area jazz musicians: Jon Rarick on trumpet and fluegelhorn; Matt Beck on alto sax, soprano sax and flute; Dan Meinhardt on tenor sax and clarinet; Tom Zimny on baritone sax; Josh Torrey on trombone; Kenny Thompson on guitar; Alex Stombres on keyboards; Conor Roe on bass; and Matt Kellen on drums.

Rarick also attended the College of Lake County and Grayslake North High School. Throughout high school, he participated in Bill Chapin and Paul Nielsen's Grayslake Jazz Combo Workshop, where he is currently an instructor and directs one of six combos.

Worship services are at 8:15 and 10:30 a.m. Sundays, with Christian education for all ages at 9:30 a.m. Sundays during the school year. The senior pastor is the Rev. Gary Waters.
