American Legion Post 964 donates $3,000 to VAC

Submitted by Michael Peck

Richard Johnson, commander of American Legion Post 964, Lake Zurich, recently presented Nick Konz, president, of Veterans Assistance Commission of Lake County, with a check for $3,000 in support of the VAC's not-for-profit assistance to indigent veterans. The funding will assist the VAC's efforts in supporting the Lovell FHCC with emergency housing.

The VAC provides emergency assistance and assistance with VA claims to veterans and their families in Lake County.

President Konz noted that the VAC must expand its outreach effort to reach the surviving spouses of disabled veterans. A recent review showed 2,500 veterans eligible for the standard homestead exemption for disabled veterans, but only 1,100 have signed up.

The problem for surviving spouses is that if the veteran dies before signing up, the spouse may be ineligible for the exemption.

The VAC files claims with the VA for the surviving spouses that include compensation and burial benefits. For more information, call the Veterans Assistance Commission of Lake County, (847) 377-3344, 20 S. Martin Luther King Ave., Waukegan.
