Schaumburg Boomers blanked by Miners 3-0

The Schaumburg Boomers dropped a 3-0 contest to the Southern Illinois Miners on the road Wednesday night.

Newcomer Lars Liguori started for the Boomers and worked six innings. Southern Illinois scored the first run in the fourth inning with two outs and added two more in the sixth on a homer from Steve Marino. Liguori allowed just 2 earned runs on 7 hits while walking two and striking out three in his Schaumburg debut.

The offense stalled against the combination of four pitchers, registering just 6 hits. Josh Kimborowicz improved to 6-0 with 6⅓ scoreless innings for the Miners. The Boomers have 6 hits or fewer over each of the past three games.

Zack Weigel and Mark Nelson each notched a pair of hits in the fifth shutout loss of the season. The Boomers (21-20) placed just two runners at second base in the contest. Derek DeYoung and Jake Joyce each tossed a scoreless inning out of the bullpen. The team committed an error for the first time in seven games in dropping a third straight while Southern Illinois (28-12) ran their win streak to eight.

The series concludes on Thursday night at 7:05 p.m. with RHP Scott Schultz (3-2, 4.98) on the mound against RHP Jarrett Miller (2-2, 2.61).
