Boomers swept by Miners

The Schaumburg Boomers were swept on the road by the Southern Illinois Miners after dropping a 6-5 decision in 11 innings on Thursday night.

Southern Illinois scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the 11th with two outs against Dexter Price to win a ninth straight contest while handing the Boomers a sixth straight road defeat. Schaumburg raced to an early advantage but could not hold the lead. Mark Nelson and Kenny Towns drove home runs in the top of the first and Ino Patron drilled a two-run homer as Schaumburg led 4-1. The Miners tied the score in the bottom of the second but a homer from Paul Kronenfeld again put the Boomers ahead in the third.

The bullpen worked 5.2 innings and did not allow an earned run after Scott Schultz worked five innings. Zack Weigel, Jordan Dean and Patron all finished with a pair of hits as the Boomers tallied 10. Schaumburg left the go-ahead run in scoring position in the ninth, 10th, and 11th.

The Boomers (21-21) return home for Independence Day weekend on Friday and will celebrate with three consecutive nights of fireworks.
