Pence honors state's first governor with graveside ceremony

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Gov. Mike Pence and first lady Karen Pence have honored Indiana's first governor during a bicentennial ceremony celebrating the state's founding fathers.

The Wednesday ceremony took place in Clark County in southern Indiana and involved the Pence's placing a wreath at the grave of Gov. Jonathan Jennings, who left office in 1822 to take a seat in Congress.

State historian William Wesley Woollen says Jennings later lost his seat in 1830 partially due to his alcoholism. He died in 1834.

The first couple later traveled to Indiana's first state capitol, Corydon. There they took part in a ceremony marking the 200th anniversary of the state's constitutional convention.

Pence says it's important to honor Indiana's founders as the state celebrates its bicentennial.
