Lake in the Hills adopts new emergency alert system

Lake in the Hills residents now can sign up to receive messages of local emergency alerts, advisories and real-time public safety messages.

The Lake in the Hills Police Department has partnered with Nixle to the new system. All Nixle alerts are geographically targeted and can be sent instantaneously via text, email, web, and the Nixle Mobile App.

Residents can register for alerts following these steps:

• Text ZIP code to 888777 from mobile phone

• Sign up online at lith.org via the Nixle Widget

Once registered, residents will receive a confirmation text to their mobile device. Residents also can customize their alert settings on nixle.com and create a user profile.

The village's current GeoCast Web Reverse Notification System (reverse 9-1-1 calling) will be discontinued June 30.

"We are urging our community to sign up for Nixle to receive important notifications, alerts, and messages regarding what is happening in and around Lake in the Hills and McHenry County," police department spokeswoman Amanda Schmitt said. "The service is secure, reliable and easy to use for our organization."

Nixle partners with NLETS for data security, as well as the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, the National Blue Alert Network, and Google for reach and two-way information exchange. For more information, visit nixle.com or call Schmitt at (847) 658-5676.
