Witness in Urbana murder trial shot while sitting in car

URBANA, Ill. (AP) - Authorities say a central Illinois murder trial witness was shot the night before proceedings were to begin.

Champaign County prosecutors say they will ask a judge Tuesday for a continuance. The (Champaign) News-Gazette reports (http://bit.ly/2955d7G ) that police say someone shot 19-year-old Demetrius Lane in the chest on Monday night in Urbana.

Urbana police Lt. Rich Surles says Lane was shot while sitting in a vehicle and was "very likely shot from a close distance." Police say they're looking for a suspect. Lane had surgery.

Lane was scheduled to testify in the Tuesday murder trial of 19-year-old Kyjuan Dorsey. Dorsey is accused in the accidental shooting death of 18-year-old Jeremy O'Neal. Police say Lane drove a vehicle with Dorsey and O'Neal in October when the men were looking to shoot members of a rival gang.
