Kids have fun, get creative in Libertyville District 70 summer school
Third- and fourth-graders ate dirt in cooking class while fifth-grade students created circuit boards using modeling compound - all part of summer school classes in Libertyville Elementary District 70.
More than 1,000 students from prekindergarten to eighth grade attended classes at Highland Middle School, where they choose between 70 courses including animation, deep sea diving, Wall Street in Libertyville, edible math games and science investigation.
"It's a great experience for them to come out and try new classes or sharpen up on their reading skills or just play with their friends in a sports class," summer school principal Gerry Carollo said Tuesday. "It's a positive experience. We have over a thousand kids, which says it all right there. All by choice."
The five-week program began June 13 and ends July 14, with classes running from 8 a.m. to noon Monday through Thursday.
In Cooking for Fun, students laughed as they mixed chocolate pudding, Oreo cookies, M&M's and gummy worms to create a delicious dish called "dirt."
"Summer school is good. I like Cooking for Fun. You get to make different foods and then eat it," third-grader Jacob Allen said while eating the very sweet treat. "I love chocolate. This is way better than being at home."
