Dolick appointed Prospect Heights' new 5th Ward alderman

Prospect Heights Mayor Nick Helmer spent months seeking a replacement for former 5th Ward Alderman David Derwin after Derwin resigned in March.

Helmer said he finally found the right person in Matthew Dolick, who was sworn into office Monday.

Dolick, who has lived in the 5th Ward for four years, met Helmer while volunteering in a customer service role with the Prospect Heights Police Department.

"He was excited about applying, and we had the interview three weeks ago," Helmer said.

Dolick will be a good representative for the residents of Quincy Park, a 625-unit townhouse development that makes up 95 percent of the ward's population, Helmer said.

The new alderman holds a pilot's license and worked for ATA Airlines, giving him insight into issues involving the Chicago Executive Airport, the mayor added.

Dolick graduated from St. Louis University with an economics degree and currently works as a salesman for an extermination company.

"He's a very levelheaded man that wants to serve," Helmer said. "That's the first indication to me of what he can do."

There were five applicants for Derwin's seat, Helmer said.

"I'm very excited about what (Dolick) brings to table," he added. "He's one of those people that's excited about what they're doing and want to do."

Derwin, who was elected to the city council in April 2015, resigned in March because he was moving to Des Plaines. His term was set to expire in 2019.
