Vernon Hills arena hosts 'Pucks for Autism' hockey tournament

Glacier Ice Arena in Vernon Hills hosted hockey Saturday for a good cause.

The four-day "Pucks for Autism" adult tournament runs through Sunday, and features 16 teams from the Chicago area, Rockford and Wisconsin. Proceeds benefit the Autism Society of Illinois.

It's the fifth year for the tournament, but a first for Vernon Hills. Previously, the tournament was held at the Edge Ice Arena in Bensenville.

The event originated from a group of fathers who love hockey and have children affected by autism. They decided to combine the efforts of raising awareness and supporting autism with a benefit hockey tournament.

The tournament continues Sunday, with games beginning at 8 a.m.

Autism is a biological and neurological disorder that affects 1 in 50 children ranging in age from 18 months to 5 years. It is estimated that 2 million people in the U.S. are affected by autism.

The disorder can affect communication, social skills and learning. There is no known cure. For information about autism, visit http://www.autismillinois.org/
