Bartlett house fire does $182,000 in damage

A fire Friday afternoon in the second-floor bedroom of a house on the 900 block of Spruce Lane in Bartlett did an estimated $182,000 in damage to the home and its contents, Bartlett Fire Protection District officials said in a news release.

The fire was reported about noon. By the time fire personnel arrived, all residents had left the home, but flames were coming out of broken second-floor windows. Although the fire was quickly extinguished, there was severe damage to the contents and the interior finishes, officials said. The home had smoke detectors but they didn't alert residents, the release said.

"Today's fire spread extremely fast," Chief Michael Falese said in the release. "Even with the homeowner home and quick fire department notification, the fire extended outside the bedroom and broke out the windows. It is critical that everyone has working smoke detectors."

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
