Knit, Crochet Group in Elk Grove donates work to charities

Twenty-seven women are members of the Knit and Crochet Group at the Sheila Ray Adult Center in Elk Grove Village. Each Monday from 1 to 3 p.m., these ladies meet, knit and crochet to fill the donation requests for their fine products.

This past year alone, they have donated hats, scarves and gloves to PADS. The Elk Grove High School Student Services Office asked for baby hats, bootees and blankets for expectant high school mothers. Now, the Knit and Crochet Group provides the baby items through the Hopeful Beginnings Program to six District 214 high schools.

This past winter, more than 50 red baby hats were sent to Alexian Brothers Medical Center to promote American Heart Month, bringing awareness to heart disease and congenital heart defects.

Project Linus and a homeless shelter in Palatine each received blankets. Lap blankets for the sick, prayer shawls for a church and squares for payers go to local hospice units in the area.

This group welcomes all new volunteers. If you are just learning to knit or crochet, you will find a seasoned group that will share their methods, skills and patterns.

In addition to all the goods they give to help others, they also make items to sell. Their only income is from the sale of items at the annual Holiday Bazaar, which is held the first Friday and Saturday of December at the Sheila Ray Center. The money made from the Holiday Bazaar is used for supplies. They are always in need of yarn donations.

To join the group, donate yarn or make requests for knitted or crocheted items, call (847) 364-7224. The Sheila Ray Adult Center, 225 E. Elk Grove Blvd., in Elk Grove Village, is a facility of the Elk Grove Park District.
