Village to offer credit for reducing water usage

As a conservation incentive, the South Elgin Village Board approved a $5 per month credit for each month a customer's water usage is below 2,000 gallons (1,999 or less).

The monthly credits will be tracked in the finance department on a 12-month fiscal year basis.

Since usage is billed to customers in arrears (the month after consumption), tracking of the conservation credits will run from June, and a "lump sum" credit will be applied to utility bills issued in July of each year.

The $5 will be credited for each month of water usage below 2,000 gallons, for a maximum possible credit of $60 annually.

Last July, about 1,000 residents realized a credit.

To assist with conservation efforts, the Public Works Department has shared a list of water conservation tips at wateruseitwisely.com/100-ways-to-conserve/.
