Elgin city council honors new U.S. citizens

Eighteen new U.S. citizens were recognized by the Elgin City Council during the 18th annual new citizens ceremony on Wednesday night.

The honorees — originally from Mexico, Guatemala, Sierra Leon, Ecuador and more — each got a certificate and a U.S. flag lapel flag. The event is coordinated by a committee that includes volunteers from Elgin Community College, Gail Borden Public Library, The Literacy Connection and Centro de Informacion. The Elgin Master Chorale sang the national anthem and “America the Beautiful.”
