Relay For Life of Barrington raises $100,000

Relay For Life of Barrington took place Friday, June 10, at Barrington High School. More than 200 people were in attendance comprised of survivors, caregivers, friends, families, volunteers, businesses and Barrington officials.

The weather was steamy, but free of rain, which can often deter those from coming out to this annual event. Despite low attendance, Relay For Life Barrington has already raised more than $100,000 and continues. It is currently the 11th largest Relay For Life event in the state of Illinois.

Relay For Life of Barrington benefits the American Cancer Society by recruiting teams of volunteers to raise funds prior to the event and requesting corporate sponsorships from area businesses.

Fundraisers included Norton USA's annual cake auction and Baird and Warner's Pints and Pinot night. Their efforts were rewarded at this six-hour event with music, dance, entertainment and more.

The night's entertainment included performances by Barrington Children's Choir, Bataille Academie, Zumba by Deanna Murphy, Barrington High School Performing Arts and Marion Licciardi.

Different this year was an activity to raise awareness of an American Cancer Society service called "Road To Recovery." It is a little known program enabling cancer patients to receive free transportation to their treatments.

With the help of Leopardo Construction of Hoffman Estates, participants created cardboard race cars and raced them from the "patient home" to Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital.

At the event, honorary chairman and former president of Northwest Community Hospital Bruce Crowther thanked participants for their support and encouraged them to continue to stay involved in this worthy cause.

Honorary Survivor and area photographer Thomas Balsamo also encouraged all to live life to the fullest and to always care for others.

The Relay For Life of Barrington wishes to thank Barrington High School staff, Village of Barrington President Karen Darch and all members of the Barrington business community who donated their products and services to assist in raising funds to benefit the American Cancer Society.
