Elgin man charged with intentionally hitting acquaintance with his car

A 28-year-old Elgin man who prosecutors say intentionally hit an acquaintance with his car was ordered held on charges of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and leaving the scene of an injury accident Tuesday.

Daniel Maccione, who was on bail for misdemeanor marijuana possession at the time of his arrest, was ordered held on a total bail of $160,000 by Cook County Judge Joseph Cataldo, who also ordered Maccione submit to random drug testing.

Police responded to a report of an injury accident on the 900 block of Bruce Drive Monday afternoon, said Cook County assistant state's attorney David Shin. The injured man told police he and Maccione were sitting in Maccione's car when Maccione punched him in the side of his face, Shin said.

The man exited the car and began walking away when he heard the vehicle accelerate, Shin said. When the man ran off the street and into some nearby grass, Maccione followed him, struck him and left the scene, Shin said.

The man suffered a sprained foot and abrasions, Shin said.

Elgin police found Maccione at his home where they located his vehicle. They later observed damage to the car's hood and windshield and grass under the front bumper, Shin said.

If convicted of the most serious charge, Maccione faces up to seven years in prison. Probation is also an option. He next appears in court on July 15.
