Film to explore dangers of a plastic society

The Environmental Defenders of McHenry County will host a free screening of "Plastic Paradise: The Great Pacific Garbage Patch."

The 2013 documentary film takes you thousands of miles away from civilization to the Midway Atoll - one of the most remote places on earth. And yet it has become ground zero for the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, siphoning plastics from three distant continents.

In this independent documentary film, journalist/filmmaker Angela Sun travels on a personal journey of discovery to uncover this mysterious phenomenon. Along the way, meet the scientists, researchers, influencers and volunteers who shed light on the effects of our plastic consumption and learns the problem is more insidious than you could imagine.

Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, June 23; film will be shown at 7 p.m., at Luecht Conference Center, McHenry County College, 8900 Route 14 in Crystal Lake. A discussion will follow.

The event is free to the public, but donations appreciated.
