CLC Foundation Golf Classic raises more than $115,000 for scholarships

The College of Lake County Foundation's annual Golf Classic, held June 13 at the Ivanhoe Golf Club in Mundelein, grossed more than $115,000, according to Karen Schmidt, executive director of the Foundation.

All of the net proceeds support Foundation scholarships and grants for CLC students, Schmidt said. The event drew 194 golfers, guests and Lake County dignitaries, including members of the CLC Board of Trustees. The event's major corporate sponsors were R.J. Galla Insurance, Inc.; Cancer Treatment Centers of America at Midwestern Regional Medical Center; Legat Architects; First Bank of Highland Park and Hanover Insurance Group, Inc. This year's event featured three unique hole-in-one contests. Golfers had a chance to an Indian Chief Vintage motorcycle from Indian Motorcycle of Libertyville, a Lowe pontoon boat from Wauconda Boat, or a 2016 Chevrolet Camaro from Libertyville Chevrolet. Local Grayslake brewery, Light the Lamp, generously donated tournament refreshments.

"The success of our Golf Classic can largely be accredited to Foundation Golf committee members chaired by David Galla, president of the R.J. Galla Company, Inc. insurance agency," Schmidt said.

In addition to Galla, event speakers included: Dr. William M. Griffin, chair of CLC Board of Trustees; Dr. Jerry Weber, CLC president; and 2016 graduate Hannah Cassiday, a Foundation Scholarship recipient who graduated with highest honors in May.

Cassiday, a pediatric cancer survivor and one of six children raised by a single mother, drew a standing ovation for her remarks, in which she traced her academic and athletic success back to receiving a CLC Foundation scholarship. She said it "created a ripple effect of success" in her life, such as the recent accomplishment of playing on the CLC volleyball team and being the 2016 recipient of the Dick Durrant Sophomore Academic Athlete of the Year Award, given to student athletes with 4.0 GPAs.

Cassiday will transfer to Elmhurst College this fall to pursue a career as a bilingual speech pathologist. She eventually would like to teach English in schools abroad. "After completing my master's degree, I intend to work in a hospital for children, or in elementary and middle schools teaching children to communicate effectively. So on behalf of myself and my peers, I thank you for your generosity and selflessness for giving to students you may never meet. Please continue to create this ripple effect and support CLC students," she said.

Rob Hauswirth, CLC Foundation Board vice chair and golf committee member, announced the Fairway Raffle, Silent Auction and iPad Air 2 raffle winners. He then lead the live auction of a package including more than 25 bottles of premium spirits donated by the CLC Foundation Board and nine Cohiba Cigars donated by the Golf Classic Committee.
