Knox college digitizing local black history

GALESBURG, Ill. (AP) - Knox College is using a grant from the Nation Endowment for the Humanities to create an online collection black history memorabilia.

The (Galesburg) Register-Mail reports (http://bit.ly/28JcSco) Knox staff members visited the Galesburg Public Library for Juneteenth - commemorating the post-Civil War emancipation of slaves - and invited community members to bring photos and memorabilia to be digitized.

The event included display of the six known copies of the Illinois Star, a newspaper published in the late 1930s and early 1940s to present a fairer picture of the black community.

Stephanie Grimes of Galesburg brought in a program from the 1962 anniversary dinner of the Phyllis Wheatley Club. Grimes says her aunt was a member of the club formed to help families in the community.
