Chicago Blackhawks agree to terms with Schmaltz

The Blackhawks have agreed with forward Nick Schmaltz on a three-year, entry-level contract. The team announced the news Sunday afternoon.

Schmaltz, a first-round pick (20th overall) of the Hawks in 2014, spent the last two seasons playing at the University of North Dakota. The 6-foot, 171-pound Schmaltz scored 11 goals and had 35 assists in 37 games last season.

The Hawks just traded Teuvo Teravainen to Carolina last week and are hoping Schmaltz can fill that spot in the lineup at some point in the near future.

"Nick's got some dynamic skills similar to Teuvo's in a lot of ways," general manager Stan Bowman said last week.

"But he's not entering the last year of his deal (like Teravainen is)."

Efforts to contact Schmaltz last week were unsuccessful.
