Images: Icons of Inverness

Located in the rolling hills of northwest Cook County, Inverness isn't your typical suburb.

The village, incorporated in 1962, is known for its distinctive homes, large lots and scenic streets.

George Ela was one of the first settlers to the area, known then as Deer Grove, in 1836.

Other early settlers included Ezekial Cady, Thomas Falls Wilson and Thomas Atkinson.

Many of those early residents are buried at Cady Cemetery, located just off Ela Road.

The cemetery was started by Cady and his wife, Adaline, who buried their son Wilbert there 1841, according to the Palatine Historical Society.

Inverness is also known for its village hall, the Four Silos, which rumor has it was a former hideout of Al Capone.
