Schaumburg police warn of telephone scams

Schaumburg police are warning community residents of various kinds of telephone scams that have been reported to them recently.

These scams include callers impersonating IRS agents seeking back taxes, a grandchild of the victim in need of emergency funds, a charity seeking donations and sweepstakes firms claiming the victim has won but must pay a fee to receive a prize.

Police advise potential victims not to be pressured to make any immediate decision about anything or give away any money or personal information to an unsolicited caller. Don't be afraid to just hang up.

One should report suspected scam calls to the Federal Trade Commission at (877) FTC-HELP or ftc.gov/complaint. IRS scams can be reported to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration at (800) 366-4484.
