Glen Ellyn man accused of trying to kill 61-year-old father

A 26-year-old Glen Ellyn man with a violent history is being held on $1 million bail, charged with the attempted murder of his father.

Charles Mitchell, of the 600 block of Roosevelt Road, is accused of severely beating his 61-year-old father. He's charged with attempted first-degree murder and two counts of domestic battery.

Police said they responded to a domestic violence call at 1:19 a.m. Tuesday at a hotel room Mitchell shared with his father and brother at 677 Roosevelt Road in Glen Ellyn.

Upon their arrival, officers found Mitchell's father, who authorities have not yet named, suffering from multiple head injuries.

Prosecutors said Mitchell and his brother got into an altercation resulting in Mitchell striking his brother in the face and gouging his eyes.

They say Mitchell then got into a physical altercation with his father in which Mitchell struck and kicked the man in his head and body. HIs father remains in serious condition.

“Domestic violence is traditionally thought of as spousal abuse,” DuPage County State's Attorney Robert Berlin said in a written statement. “The allegations in this case, however, that (Mitchell) beat his brother and father, clearly demonstrate that domestic violence can take many forms and can cause severe, if not irreparable, damage.”

Mitchell also is facing charges of criminal damage to property for allegedly breaking down a door and door frame during an altercation at the same hotel on March 24.

On Aug. 26, 2015, Mitchell was charged with criminal damage to property for breaking a man's phone and eyeglasses during an altercation in Wheaton. He was on probation in that case when authorities said he damaged the hotel door.

Mitchell's next court appearance is scheduled for July 5 in front of Judge Daniel Guerin in courtroom 4014.
