Cougars drop both games of doubleheader to Snappers

BELOIT, Wis. - The Kane County Cougars (30-35) dropped a doubleheader against the Beloit Snappers (31-34) by scores of 7-3 and 5-4 on Wednesday.

In the back end of the twin bill, the Cougars lost on a walk off 3-run homer by the Snappers' Michael Soto. In both games, the Cougars held the lead.

Game 1 of the doubleheader started off promising for the Cougars as they plated 3 runs in the opening inning on 2 home runs. Austin Byler launched his second homer to start the scoring before Grant Heyman's 2-run shot gave the Cougars a 3-0 lead.

Beloit answered right away as they evened the score with 3 runs against starter Emilio Vargas (0-1) in the bottom of the first. Jesus Lopez, Michael Soto and Justin Higley all connected on RBI singles as part of a 5-hit inning with eight Snappers coming up to the plate.

Vargas allowed another 3 runs in the fourth inning, highlighted by a Trace Loehr 2-run double.

The Snappers added another run in the bottom of the sixth for a 7-3 lead, which ended up being the final score. Andrew Tomasovich (1-0) earned the win with 1⅓ of scoreless relief after starter Kevin Johnson left in the fifth inning.

In Game 2, the Cougars shot out to another early lead, only for the Snappers to come back again. Leadoff man Jason Morozowski singled, stole second, advanced on a wild pitch, and scored on an Austin Byler RBI sacrifice fly as the Cougars scored the game's first run.

Beloit tied it at one in the bottom half of the first against Cougars' starter, Austin Mason (0-0).

After three innings, Mason exited for right-hander Ryan Burr, (1-1) who allowed the go-ahead run. Ryan Howell doubled off Burr with two outs and scored on Justin Higley's RBI triple. Beloit went up 2-1 after the fourth inning.

In the fifth frame, Beloit's right-hander Cody Kurz (1-2) allowed a line drive 2-run home run to Raymel Flores giving the Cougars their second lead. And the Cougars got another home run in the following inning from Grant Heyman, his second of the day.

In the ninth inning, the Cougars endured their first walk-off loss. With two on and two outs, Michael Soto homered to deep left field off Drew Muren (0-2).

Jared Lyons (2-2) picked up the win for the Snappers
