500 volunteers spruce up Wheeling schools for fall

More than 500 volunteers from Riverwoods-based Discover Financial Service's Business Technology Department spent Tuesday giving Eugene Field Elementary School and Jack London Middle School in Wheeling an indoor and outdoor makeover for when students return to school in August.

Among other projects, they painted murals, built bookcases and planter boxes, created an outdoor classroom area, worked on landscaping.

The event was part of Discover Cares, where nearly 70 percent of the Riverwoods' workforce participates in various community service projects.

Discover employees also work to mentor students at Walt Whitman and Mark Twain elementary schools through Big Brothers, Big Sisters of Metropolitan Chicago.

The schools are part of Wheeling Township Elementary District 21.
