Suburban-based K-9 Comfort Dogs head to Orlando

When the news turns tragic, no matter the location, Barbara Granado of Arlington Heights knows what to do: Pack her bags, grab Hannah's "pet me" vest and go. Granado is one of 20 people working with Lutheran Church Charities' K-9 Comfort Dogs who flew to Orlando early Monday with their 12 pooches to begin consoling those affected by the shootings at the Pulse nightclub. Suburban mosque leaders denounce Orlando killings

Suburban Muslim leaders are condemning the killing of 49 patrons at a gay nightclub in Orlando by a man who law enforcement officials said had leanings toward radical Islamic terrorism. In addition, the head of a Chicago-area branch of a prominent Muslim civil rights and advocacy group issued a statement Monday disagreeing that supporting gay people is religiously impermissible under Islam - a belief he said is held by most of about 8 million Muslims in the United States. Expert: Vigilance key to fight terrorism

Sunday's mass shooting at an Orlando nightclub is a tragic reminder that terrorists increasingly are fixated on "soft targets," public locations such as shopping malls, schools and festivals. Man found stabbed at Wheaton apartment complex

One person was found stabbed in a Wheaton apartment complex Monday afternoon, police said. The man was rushed to Central DuPage Hospital in Winfield, Wheaton Deputy Police Chief Bill Murphy said. His condition was not immediately known. Full story.

Elgin commission: do not display lynching mural in public

The Elgin cultural arts commission unanimously recommended that a controversial mural inspired by a 1930 lynching photo be removed permanently from public display. "Everything that you said was really moving," Commissioner Karly Kirkpatrick said a commission meeting attended by about 50 people Monday night. No one hurt in Vernon Hills car fire

Nobody was injured when an SUV caught fire while driving in Vernon Hills Monday afternoon, fire officials said. Countryside Fire Protection District responded to the call at 3:30 p.m. on a frontage road near Route 21 and Hollister Parkway, Battalion Chief Tony DeRose said. Full story.
