Celebrate Flag Day in Batavia

Flag Day has come to Batavia.

Tuesday will be the official commemorative celebration of the 100th anniversary. A Flag Day 100th Anniversary Celebration will begin at 7 p.m. Tuesday, June 14, at Batavia Riverwalk, 100 N. Island Ave.

On National Flag Day, the Batavia Riverwalk will glow with 1,777 luminarias, representing the year the Continental Congress first adopted our national flag.

Batavia schoolchildren are decorating the luminaria as part of the effort to involve all ages in Batavia's Flag Day 100th Anniversary Celebration. Admission is free.

The party at 7 p.m. will feature patriotic music performed by the Air National Guard Band of the Midwest and the Batavia Patriotic Pop-Up Chorus. Winners of an essay contest, "What the American Flag Means to Me," will read their essays.

Plans for a Flag Day Memorial to be built in Batavia will be revealed to the public for the first time. Dr. Bernard Cigrand was a Batavia resident, often called the "Father of Flag Day."
