Boomers sweep ThunderBolts

The Schaumburg Boomers won a season best fifth straight game by securing a 6-3 road decision over the Windy City ThunderBolts to sweep the series.

Trailing 1-0, Justin Byrd tied the game with an RBI single in the top of the third to score Ino Patron, who doubled to open the frame. Down 2-1, Schaumburg scored five times in the fifth inning to seize control. Shawn Payne scored from second on an error to tie the game. Jordan Dean singled home a pair and Dusty Robinson added a 2-run double in the rally.

Scott Schultz tossed 7 innings to win, improving to 2-1. Schultz struck out three and allowed 2 runs. The Boomers won despite just 6 hits, two of which came from Byrd. Evan Boyd worked the final 1.1 innings to tally his second save of the season. Boyd has not allowed a run in his first 16 innings of work. Mark Nelson saw his 13-game hitting streak come to a close in the game but did reach base.

The Boomers (13-14) will return home for a brief three-game series with the Traverse City Beach Bums beginning on Tuesday night at 6:30 p.m.
