Bullpen allows seven runs, Orioles lose 11-6 to Blue Jays

TORONTO (AP) - Too many walks and too few relievers turned into big trouble for the Baltimore Orioles.

Edwin Encarnacion hit two more homers and drove in five runs as the Toronto Blue Jays beat Baltimore 11-6 on Saturday, the Orioles' second straight defeat following a five-game winning streak.

Baltimore issued eight walks, including a season-high five by starter Mike Wright.

T.J. McFarland (1-2) lost in relief, allowing five runs in two innings. Both batters he walked in Toronto's five-run sixth came around to score.

"He just couldn't adjust his sights," Baltimore manager Buck Showalter said. "It's a fine line. He was about two or three inches from making a lot of quality sinkers."

McFarland took the brunt of Toronto's late surge because Showalter didn't want to use relievers Brad Brach, Dylan Bundy and Mychal Givens

McFarland and Brian Duensing allowed seven runs, a season-high for Baltimore's bullpen.

"You don't like having to face those guys with (McFarland) and Duensing but we had no choice today" Showalter said, acknowledging that Baltimore may have to call up reinforcements for Sunday's series finale.

Encarnacion snapped an 0-for-19 slump by ending Friday's game with a leadoff homer in the 10th. On Saturday, he walked in the first, hit an RBI double in the third, walked in the fifth, hit a three-run blast in Toronto's five-run sixth, then went back-to-back with Michael Saunders in the eighth.

"When you feel good, they can throw the ball on the ground and you can still hit it," Encarnacion said through a translator.

Encarnacion has five homers and 13 RBIs in his past 10 games. Of his past 34 hits, 21 have gone for extra bases.

It was the 23rd multihomer game of Encarnacion's career. Toronto hit consecutive homers for the third time this season.

Wright allowed four runs and six hits in five-plus innings. He called Encarnacion "one of the best hitters I've faced."

Machado also doubled and singled and scored three times. His leadoff homer in the sixth gave the Orioles a 4-3 lead but Toronto answered with five runs in the bottom half.

J.A. Happ (7-3) allowed four runs and eight hits in seven innings.

Toronto trailed by a run when Kevin Pillar led off the sixth with a single, chasing Wright. McFarland gave up a single to Darwin Barney and pinch hitter Devon Travis tied it with a sacrifice fly.

A pair of walks loaded the bases for Josh Donaldson, who hit a go-ahead sacrifice fly. Encarnacion followed with his 14th home run, a second-deck drive to left.

When Davis connected off Happ in the fourth, it was the first extra-base hit Happ had surrendered to a left-handed batter this season.

Davis has homered in four straight. He has 16 home runs in 43 career games at Rogers Centre, and 34 homers against the Blue Jays since 2008, more than any other opponent.
