1 person killed, 1 injured in Southern Illinois plane crash

MARION, Ill. (AP) - One person was killed and another is listed in critical condition after a single-engine plane crashed at a Southern Illinois airport.

WSIU-FM reports (http://bit.ly/1Unr8G9 ) two people were on board when the crash occurred around 4:30 p.m. Friday at Williamson County Regional Airport.

Airport Director Doug Kimmel says the plane was attempting to land when it crashed about 500 feet north of the airport's north-south runway.

Williamson County Chief Deputy Coroner Scott Kinley identified the man who died as 56-year-old John Alleman of Carbondale. Injured was 64-year-old Todd Greiner, who's listed in critical condition at a St. Louis area hospital.

National Transportation Safety Board Investigator Aaron Sauer says the plane had reportedly been on an instructional flight. It was performing touch-and-go maneuvers when it crashed.
