World War II recalled in event at Fox River Trolley Museum

Revisit World War II with re-enactors at "Rails to Victory," which continues from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday at the Fox River Trolley Museum, 365 S. LaFox St. (Route 31) in South Elgin.

Experience a World War II military encampment, view period battles on the banks of the Fox River, be a fan at an actual U.S. Home Front baseball game with the Rockford Peaches, made famous in the 1992 film "A League of Their Own." The schedule includes mock battles at noon and 3 p.m. Sunday and an All-American Girls Baseball game at 12:30 p.m. Sunday. While the performance is family-friendly, it is not recommended for the very young who may be upset by loud noises, theatrical gunfire and battle re-enacting.

Tickets for the event are $15 at the museum or $16.50 online at www.foxtrolley.org. Admission to the grounds is free.

Co-sponsors include the South Elgin Parks and Recreation Department, the Kane County Forest Preserve District and the World War II Historical Re-Enactment Society. The event is a fundraiser for the nonprofit museum, which works to preserve and maintain a Chicago-focused collection of antique railway equipment and a link to Chicago's colorful heritage of public transportation and electrically-operated interurban (intercity) railways.

Re-enactor Zachary Bierhauls, 17, of Gillett, Wisconsin, explains how a MG 42 (Mauser general purpose machine gun designed in Nazi Germany) works and how German soldiers had to carry two machine gun barrels because after 500 rounds, they became too hot to use. It was part of the World War II living history re-enactment at Fox River Trolley Museum in South Elgin, which continues today. Brian Hill/bhill@dailyherald.com
