Help animals in need Save-A-Pet offers adoption special to make room for 'Just One Day' rescues

"Just One Day" is an annual event in which no-kill animal shelters around the county send volunteers to rescue dogs and cats from euthanasia at other facilities without no-kill policies.

National "Just One Day" takes place Saturday, June 11. Save-A-Pet animal shelter is offering a special deal Thursday, June 9, through Sunday, June 12, to help make space for animals rescued during the event.

Adopting a dog or cat makes room for another animal to come in, while fostering one animal for a couple of weeks also allows Save-A-Pet to literally save another life.

"'Just One Day' gives no-kill shelters across the country an opportunity to participate in an unified event that can save more than 10,000 animals nationwide from euthanasia," said Sally Hubbard, Save-A-Pet animal welfare and operations manager.

"Last year, we rescued more than 50 animals, but we need to make room for these new arrivals, so we are hoping to find homes for our current residents by offering potential families a sizable discount when adopting one of our cats or dogs during our June 9-12 special."

The no-kill adoption center is therefore offering a special 50 percent discount those days to anyone who adopts a cat that is 1 year or older or a dog that is 7 months or older.

Operating as a true no-kill rescue, Save-A-Pet will participate in "Just One Day" by sending both staff and volunteers to surrounding animal control agencies to rescue dozens of animals from euthanasia.

In addition to saving lives, area veterinarians will partner with Save-A-Pet to help with its "Just One Day" mission by volunteering their services for the day, assisting with animal intake and exams. Additionally, several veterinary practices donated coupons and certificates for discounted veterinary services, as well as goods for adopters, including Village Veterinary Clinic in Grayslake, Companion Animal Hospital in Vernon Hills and McHenry Pet Hospital.

For $150, which will support the efforts of saving animals, donors can name one of Save-A-Pet's incoming rescued "Just One Day" dogs or cats. The donor can select a name from a predesignated list, further customizing it with a last name. To name a "Just One Day" animal, visit saveapetil.org.

Save-A-Pet is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization and one of the largest no-kill cat and dog rescues in Lake County that also operates a full-time adoption center. Saving more than 61,000 animals since being founded in 1972, Save-A-Pet does not discriminate against any animal's age, health, or breed. Solely funded by the generosity of donors, the Grayslake facility costs more than $1,500,000 per year to operate.
