East Dundee's historical walks begin with local pubs June 19

History buffs and the curious can gather at East Dundee's Depot on River Street to join local historian and author Phil Aleo on a walking tour of the area's best known taverns at 11 a.m. Sunday, June 19.

Focused on Diamond Jim's, Calendo's and River Lee's, the walk will explore the early settlers, Prohibition-era tales, history and folklore surrounding each of these establishments.

"The character of the Dundee area was shaped early on by settlers, who brought their customs and traditions with them. Germans who immigrated to this area were especially knowledgeable in beer making techniques, so it's no surprise that saloons and taverns were already established and operating in the 1800s - despite the efforts of the American Temperance Society," Aleo said.

The walking tour, which will last 60 to 90 minutes, will leave from the Depot. It includes stops at all three pubs. After the conclusion of the walk, participants can choose to return on their own to any of the establishments. Tours will go rain or shine and although there is no participation fee, a suggested donation of $5 to the Dundee Foundation is welcomed.

Two additional Sunday walks are scheduled for July 10 and Aug. 7.

"Dundee's Churches" - Immanuel Lutheran, First United Methodist and St. James Episcopal - will be the focus of the July walk, while the August walk will explore "Dundee's Treasures" - The Haeger Mansion on Hill Street, village hall, the old police station, and Rosie O'Hare's Public House.

"East Dundee is proud of its rich and colorful history," said Village President Lael Miller. "And we always welcome an opportunity to share our stories with visitors to our area. These walks are a great way to learn about our past and if participants need to relax after their efforts, I encourage them to visit any of our restaurants, pubs and shops that are open in our downtown business district."

Born in Chicago and raised in the Dundee Township area, Phillip A. Aleo is a photographer and historian who has researched subjects ranging from ancient to local history. His published books include "Galena, Illinois - A Timeless Treasure," "The Midwest Motorsport Legend Meadowdale Raceways," "Dundee Township, Moments Frozen in Time," "The Chateau Louise," and "The Historic Business District of Carpentersville," as well as "The Strater Hotel Story," a historical book on the history of Durango, Colorado.
