Chicago man sentenced in Naperville armed robbery

A 20-year-old Chicago man has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for robbing a Naperville man at gunpoint in the resident's garage in December 2013.

Marquies James, of the 6700 block of South Campbell, pleaded guilty this week to armed robbery. A second count of armed robbery, aggravated robbery and possession of a stolen motor vehicle were dropped in exchange for his plea, according to court records.

Prosecutors said James stole a 2005 Nissan Pathfinder in Chicago the day before the robbery. The next day, while driving through Naperville, James targeted a 65-year-old man who was working on his tablet in his garage on the 200 block of Briarheath Circle.

James entered the man's garage about 10:45 a.m. and attempted to take the tablet, authorities said. After a brief struggle, James pulled a gun, took the tablet and fled.

Naperville police found James about 25 minutes later walking along a street after he attempted to rob another man on the 400 block of Apple River Drive. They arrested him after a brief chase.

The gun turned out to be a toy, authorities said.

Prosecutors said James will now be transferred to Cook County, where there is an outstanding warrant for his arrest, before he goes to the department of corrections.
