Browsing made easy at Vernon Area Library

A persistent question dogs readers: What should I read next? As part of Vernon Area Public Library's ongoing mission to connect readers with great books, the library has arranged its popular collections to make them easy to browse. Library data show that browsing accounts for three of four checkouts, with the rest resulting from holds placed on specific titles. Located just off South Milwaukee Ave., at 300 Olde Half Day Rd., in Lincolnshire, the contemporary library space resembles a bookstore as much as a traditional public library.

Upon entering, patrons are greeted by an ever-changing themed display, currently focused on games. To the right, new and popular releases are arranged covers out, allowing browsers to scan for recognizable authors and books they may have heard or read about. To help readers zero in on titles, the shelves are divided by genre - nonfiction, biographies, fiction, mysteries, science fiction and romance novels, then alphabetical by author last name. A television continuously shows library-selected book trailers to pique reader interest.

For those who prefer an e-reader, nearby shelves hold a selection of Kindles and Nooks for checkout - already loaded with bestsellers, romance novels and mysteries, nonfiction or teen and graphic novels. The e-readers are a great option for patrons eager to read high-demand titles that may not be on shelf when they visit. A "staff picks" display in the Adult department prominently displays books recommended by Vernon Area librarians.

A more recent addition to the library's browsing displays are book club favorites, a rotating collection consisting of about 50 titles beloved by the adult book clubs that the library serves. Most are fiction although highly popular nonfiction books are often included. For readers toting books to the beach or pool, or taking them on summer trips, book club titles are perfect since most are paperback format. Many patrons zero in on these cover-out shelves near the windows to browse the reader-curated books.

The library doesn't rely on passive displays alone to connect readers with books. Desk staff, who themselves are voracious readers, are prepared to help patrons choose a new author or title that they'll love. Vernon's librarians keep pace with new releases, reviews, author appearances in the media and publishing industry buzz.

A book club concierge service handpicks reading materials for book clubs. Through the concierge service, an expert librarian recommends a book club's next selection and pulls together all copies needed for the group, along with background information, an author profile and discussion questions. The materials are packaged in a sturdy zipper bag for easy carrying, and each kit can be checked out for six weeks by in-district cardholders. The service has been a hit with area book groups.

The only possible downside to the browsing and recommendation options may be ending up with more books than can be easily carried. No worries; the library offers heavy-duty tote bags for checkout at the circulation desk.
