Antioch Township woman died of stroke before being bitten by family's dogs
An Antioch Township woman died of a massive stroke before she was bitten multiple times by two large family dogs, authorities said Wednesday.
Autopsy results showed Elizabeth Flood, 71, died between 5:45 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. Tuesday in her house on the 26000 block of West Channel Avenue, and confirmed that dog bites she suffered occurred after she was dead, Lake County Sheriff's Detective Christopher Covelli said.
Orlando Portillo, of the Lake County coroner's office, said the official time of death was listed as 6:55 p.m., but it's unknown when she actually suffered the stroke and died.
The dogs remain with Lake County Animal Control, Covelli said, but he could not determine what will happen to the animals, given the autopsy results.
Flood's 23-year-old grandson found her dead in a bedroom after he returned home from work about 5:30 p.m. He called 911 and said it appeared their two dogs attacked his grandmother, according to a news release Tuesday from the Lake County sheriff's office.
Detectives determined Flood suffered numerous dog bites. One of the family's dogs, a German shepherd, was found in the neighborhood when police arrived. Lake County Animal Control took that dog and another, a Labrador/chow mix, into custody.
Authorities said Flood was in the house with the dogs after her grandson left for work in the morning. The grandson lived with Flood, authorities said.
