Resident Takes Both Personal and Professional Pride at The Springs

Chad Ulery takes both a personal and professional interest in making sure things are shipshape at work. As the maintenance mechanic at The Springs at Monarch Landing, professionally, Chad is responsible for keeping things in working order, as well as making sure the building is up to date with state and county regulations. Personally, Chad is invested in making sure that his grandmother who has lived at Monarch Landing for seven years, is safe and comfortable in the home she loves.

A resident of Sugar Grove, Chad first worked as an independent contractor, specializing in home repair, exterior work and landscaping. "I'm self-taught," he said, "My father is very hands-on and showed me things through the years. I like to keep busy with my hands. I'm not much of a school person, but I'm a quick learner."

Chad worked at another local retirement community before coming on board at Monarch Landing five years ago. When the adjacent building for The Springs opened three years ago, he moved there. The Springs provides memory support assisted living, rehabilitation, respite and skilled nursing. "It's a beautiful building and I like to keep it looking and running great. It's nice having the opportunity to make sure everything is done properly," Chad said.

Chad sometimes sees residents from independent living at Monarch Landing, receiving care or rehab at The Springs. "They're always happy to see me. It's nice for them to have a familiar face here at The Springs, and it's fun for me to be able to catch up with them if I haven't seen them for awhile," he said.

His days are full, but go by quickly according to Chad. "When I start in the morning I do mechanical rounds and inspections for regulatory requirements. I make sure that we're up to code and that everything is properly recorded. Then I move onto the daily routine of fixing things that might not be working properly anywhere in the building or on the grounds. I'm able to attend to things right away," he said,

Chad always takes time out to talk with the residents. "When I visit with a resident, I enjoy leaving them with a smile," he said. "When you can make someone else feel good just by doing your job, it in turn makes you feel good about yourself. Sometimes, it's something as simple as fixing the remote."
