ALERT: Switch problems delay Metra trains

Amtrak switch problems are delaying Metra riders departing from Union Station during this evening's rush hour on three different lines.

Delays of more than 30 minutes exist for commuters on the BNSF, Southwest and Heritage lines.

Amtrak's switch problems began suddenly around 5 p.m., Metra spokesman Michael Gillis said, affecting Metra riders departing from the south end of Union Station.

"Trains are getting out. They're just delayed," he said. "I can't say how long it will take to fix them. It will probably be continuing for a while as we're playing catch-up."
