Time for the backyard to 'grow up'

Our deck is a great-size outdoor space, approximately 593 square feet. Plenty of space to hold a large party. I feel it needs a "centerpiece," perhaps a fire table. And definitely some color in the form of cushions and/or pillows, or maybe some funky furniture. Over the years we've had a few table sets and even a screened enclosure, which didn't make it through a bad storm. The backyard has served its purpose as a kid-friendly spot for many years. But now we are ready for a grown-up space. It needs a spark and I'm not sure where to begin.

The deck appears to be in great condition and a great size for outdoor space. However, it lacks a "centerpiece" that can draw people to it and act as a focal point for the yard. There is a lack of seating and shade. This patio would be ideal with a curved sofa and a fire pit in the middle. Additionally, you would still have room for a dining set.

Suggestions:

• Fire pit. A portable Vin de Flame gas fire pit would be a perfect focal point for this deck. Made out of retired wine barrels, the Vin De Flame fire pit makes this space feel grown up while also giving it a unique flair.

• Curved sectional/curved sofa. A curved, wicker sofa from the Lloyd Flanders Mesa Collection would be a pleasant addition to the deck. It would also assist in making the deck feel more inviting. If you do not wish to go with a curved sectional, a curved, aluminum sectional with either a recliner, lounge chairs or a swivel glider made by Tropitone would be a great option. That would be very nice with the fire pit.

• Dining set. Depending upon what you are looking for, you could do a dining set and carry the theme throughout with the addition of wicker chairs. You do not necessarily have to buy a large table. With the kids out of the house, a bistro table with a 7.5-foot umbrella would look lovely. What you choose to do just depends on the desired layout you wish to achieve.

• Gas grill. I would always recommend getting a gas grill because there is nothing like grilling in the summer. We carry built-in islands that are made out of aluminum that you do not even have to put footings on.
