Elgin man faces felony gun charges

A 24-year-old Elgin man faces two felonies for recklessly shooting a gun in a residential area early Saturday morning, authorities said.

Police Cmdr. Colin Fleury said officers responded to a report of a man with a gun on the 400 block of St. Charles Street around 1:45 a.m.

Witnesses said they heard one gunshot as officers traveled to the scene. No one was hurt, and no property was damaged.

During a search of the area, officers found evidence that a shot had been fired and located a firearm. They arrested Oscar Martinez of the 400 block of St. Charles Street, who matched a suspect description provided to officers. He was charged with reckless discharge of a firearm and aggravated unlawful use of a weapon without a concealed carry license.

Martinez was not given a bond. He was released on electronic home monitoring. He will next appear in court on June 23.

The investigation is ongoing, and anyone with information is asked to call (847) 289-2507.
