Northern Illinois Food Bank's Summer Food Service Program provides meals for children at risk of hunger

(Geneva, Ill. - June 2, 2016) Northern Illinois Food Bank today announces its participation in the Summer Food Service Program (SFSP). The Summer Food Service Program is designed to fill the gap that occurs when school lets out for summer vacation and children who received free and reduced-price breakfast and lunch during the school year through the School Breakfast and National School Lunch Programs do not have access to those meal programs.

Free meals, which meet SFSP federal guidelines, will be made available to children 18 years of age

and under, and to persons over age 18 who are enrolled in a state-approved educational program for the mentally or physically disabled at participating sites across Northern Illinois.

Last year, sites sponsored by Northern Illinois Food Bank provided 288,929 summer meals to children in need. Individual program site days/hours vary. For further information about the Northern Illinois Food Bank's program, contact Jessica Willis at 630-443-6910 or visit www.SolveHungerToday.org/SummerMeals.

Northern Illinois Food Bank leads the Northern Illinois community in solving hunger by providing nutritious meals to those in need through innovative programs and partnerships. Since 1983, food manufacturers, local grocers, corporations, foundations, and individuals have come together to donate food and funds, and evaluate and repack food for distribution to 800 community food pantries and feeding programs serving more than 71,500 hungry neighbors each week across 13 counties. That commitment provided 57 million meals to those in need in FY15. The Food Bank has been recognized by Charity Navigator as a Four-Star charity since 2003.
