Man ends effort to reduce sentence for murder conviction

JOLIET, Ill. (AP) - A suburban Chicago man has told a judge he will serve his 45-year prison sentence for murdering his uncle.

The Herald-News in Joliet reports (http://bit.ly/1t4YAaE ) Jason M. Gonzalez on Thursday told Will County Circuit Judge Edward Burmila it is an injustice he will serve that time. The 30-year-old Gonzalez, who has represented himself, then withdrew his motion to have the judge reconsider the sentence imposed in September.

Gonzalez was living with his uncle's family in New Lenox Township until two months before Lance Goebel was found shot to death on Sept. 17, 2009. Prosecutors said Gonzalez had become "inappropriately fixated" on children in the family before he was evicted.

Last June, Gonzalez was representing himself during a trial last year before deciding to plead guilty to murder.
