Wanted man bitten by Lake County sheriff's dog after fleeing deputies

A Lake County Sheriff's police dog helped capture a man wanted on a warrant after he tried to flee from deputies in Old Mill Creek, authorities said.

Sheriff's deputies responded to a call about 5:15 p.m. Wednesday regarding an unresponsive person in a vehicle stopped in a lane of traffic near Sand Lake Road and Hunt Club Road, authorities said Thursday. An ambulance that arrived before sheriff's deputies found Matthew Fry, 32, of Elkhorn, Wisconsin, in the vehicle.

Fry, who had an active arrest warrant from the Cicero Police Department for failing to appear on a charge of obstructing a peace officer, fled on foot when he learned sheriff's deputies were on their way.

After arriving, deputies set up a perimeter in the area where Fry was last seen. Once authorities found him, Fry tried to flee again, according to police.

Deputy Dwight Arrowood attempted to take Fry into custody, but he resisted arrest, according to sheriff's police. Arrowood's police dog partner, Duke, was called for assistance and bit Fry, who was then taken into custody.

Fry later admitted to ingesting heroin and was taken to Vista East Hospital in Waukegan for evaluation, police said. He then was taken to the Lake County jail and is charged with resisting a peace officer and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Fry remained at the county jail Thursday awaiting transfer to the Cicero Police Department on his arrest warrant. He received a $25,000 recognizance bond on the new charges.
