Hanover Park man charged with burglary

A Hanover Park man currently on bail on a marijuana possession charge was arrested early Wednesday on new charges he burglarized a Hanover Park home.

Jaymz Vaeth, 23, faces residential burglary, aggravated battery to a police officer and possession of a controlled substance charges. In addition to his pending drug case, Vaeth was also on probation for a 2016 DuPage County burglary, said Cook County Assistant State's Attorney David Shin.

Cook County Judge Joseph Cataldo ordered Vaeth held without bail Thursday.

Police were on patrol in a residential area at 3:49 a.m. Wednesday when one of the officers spotted Vaeth, who he recalled had a misdemeanor arrest warrant out of Kane County, Shin said.

As officers approached, Vaeth attempted to flee, Shin said. He subsequently punched one of the officers in the cheek, Shin said. From a bag Vaeth carried, officers found a bottle of prescription drugs that did not belong to him and which included an address on the 6900 block of Hawthorne Lane, Shin said.

Arriving at the house, officers discovered a window broken and the place ransacked. Officers traced items found in Vaeth's bag, including the pills, sunglasses and alcohol back to the home, Shin said.

Vaeth is wanted in Kane County on charges of misdemeanor drug possession and theft of labor services, Shin said. His background includes two misdemeanor DUI convictions from 2012 and 2014 and two prior marijuana convictions.

If convicted of the pending case and the new charges, Vaeth faces a maximum sentence of 18 years in prison. He next appears in court on June 24.
