Field Day fun prevails over rain at Libertyville's Rockland School

Children squirted water at each other, ran through water sprinklers and jumped rope as Field Day at Rockland School in Libertyville signaled the end of the school year.

Wednesday's fun activities included big feet relay races, beach ball volleyball, dashes and sprints, a javelin throw, tug-of-war, pigeons in the park and squirt fish tag.

"Today we have our Field Day plan C. Plan C is start with a rain day and end with a nice day," Rockland physical education teacher Mike Kolar said. "Kids love this day. It's their favorite day of the year. It's been a crazy day."

The Rockland Family Association provided a hot dog lunch that included Goldfish crackers, Rice Krispie treats, watermelon and Gatorade.

"It's really beautiful out. Good thing it didn't rain all day because I'm really excited about Field Day," third-grader Sofia Lombardo said after competing in the 50-yard dash. "That was pretty fun playing beach ball volleyball. It's not all about winning, it's just about having fun."

The day ended in an assembly with a magician named Leopold, who entertained students using tricks that involved children, live animals and floating objects.
