Applications available for District 54 School Board

The School District 54 Board of Education is currently seeking applicants who are interested in filling a position made vacant by the resignation of Board member Karen Strykowski. Mrs. Strykowski announced her resignation, effective June 8.

In keeping with the legal requirements that the board appoint a successor within a 45-day period, the board is now seeking applicants who are interested in being appointed. The person appointed would serve until the next consolidated general election on April 4, 2017.

Residents interested in applying to become a member of the District 54 Board of Education must submit an application and a resume by 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, June 8. Submissions can be made by email, U.S. mail, fax or hand delivery to Sherry Madej, secretary to the Board of Education, (SherryMadej@sd54.org). Each submission will be acknowledged to confirm receipt. Applications are available online at http://sd54.org or you can pick one up at the Rafferty Administration Center, 524 E. Schaumburg Road in Schaumburg.

All applicants need to meet the state of Illinois legal requirements to be a member of a board of education. A board of education member must be, on the date of appointment, a U.S. citizen of at least 18 years of age, a registered voter, and a resident of Illinois and District 54 for at least one year immediately preceding the appointment. Reasons making an individual ineligible for board membership include holding an incompatible office and certain types of state or federal employment. A child sex offender, as defined in state law, is also ineligible for board of education membership.

Board service is an unpaid volunteer position. For more information regarding board service please visit the Illinois Association of School Board's website at http://www.iasb.com.

Once applications have been received, it is the Board's intent to interview all candidates during the week of June 20, 2016. The goal of the Board of Education is to appoint the new member on July 14, 2016, but this is subject to change based on the number of applicants. Please direct all questions to Andy DuRoss, Superintendent of Schools at (847) 357-5036.

Candidates for office need to file a Statement of Economic Interest in person with the Cook County Clerk. Please bring a copy of the Statement of Economic Interest and receipt of filing to the interview.
